Introduction

This workshop is a practical and mindset-focused programme designed to help professionals think analytically, derive meaningful insights from data, and communicate those insights in a way that drives action. Rather than diving into technical tools, this course builds the foundational thinking skills, frameworks, and storytelling techniques required to make sense of data and turn it into clear, compelling business narratives.

Participants will learn how to shift from reporting numbers to uncovering insights, using structured approaches to recognise patterns, frame problems, and interpret data with clarity and purpose. They will also develop the ability to explain “what is happening” and “why it matters” through audience-centric storytelling, ensuring insights translate into decisions and measurable impact.

Module 1: Data Mindset & Analytical Thinking

  • What it means to think with data instead of just reporting numbers
  • Data → Information → Insight → Action
  • Common analytical blind spots: assumptions, bias, correlation traps

Module 2: Problem Framing & Goal Setting

  • Turning business challenges into measurable questions
  • Using 5W1H and SMART goals to frame problems clearly
  • KPI Trees and performance drivers: identifying what really drives outcomes

Module 3: Foundations of Insight Generation

  • How to spot patterns in raw data: correlations, drop-offs, spikes, differences
  • Basic statistical thinking for insights: averages, variance, % change
  • Indicators of a strong insight: relevance, context, actionability
  • Basic logic patterns used in data analysis

Module 4: Root Cause Analysis & Critical Interpretation

  • Understanding “why” behind the numbers
  • Tools for RCA: 5 Whys, Fishbone Diagram
  • Distinguishing correlation from causation

Module 5: How the Brain Processes Visuals & Data

  • The dual-processing theory: how the brain interprets text vs visuals.
  • Why visuals are processed faster than text.
  • How attention, working memory, and cognitive load affect dashboard design.
  • Design visuals that guide the eye and emphasize key insights.

Activity: Visual vs Text Speed Test

  • Show two slides: one uses a visual, the other presents the same data as text. Ask participants which one they understood faster.
  • Discuss why visuals are processed dramatically faster than text, relate it to the concept of dual-channel processing.

Module 6: Visualization Psychology & Design Principles

  • Gestalt principles in chart design (proximity, similarity, continuity, closure).
  • Pre-attentive attributes: color, size, position, shape
  • Visual hierarchy: how to lead the viewer’s eyes to insights in the right sequence.
  • Choosing the right chart type for the right data (comparisons, trends, proportions, relationships, distributions).

Activity: Chart Selection Challenge

  • Practice how to choose the right visual.
  • Show different scenarios and each group picks which chart is best and why.

Activity: Walk the Eyes Exercise

  • Display 2–3 large dashboards or visuals around the room and ask participants to walk around noting where their eyes land first.
  • Facilitate a discussion on visual hierarchy.

Module 7: Designing Dashboards That Speak to the Brain

  • Principles of cognitive-friendly dashboard design.
  • The “less is more” approach: reducing noise and highlighting meaning.
  • Balancing overview, drill-down, and narrative flow.

Activity: Cognitive Load Simulation

  • Show an overly complex dashboard filled with charts and KPIs, then ask participants to find a specific number or insight within 10 seconds.
  • Reveal a simplified version and discuss how reducing visual clutter helps the brain process information faster and improves comprehension.

Activity: Visual Redesign Exercise

  • Provide a cluttered or poorly designed chart, participants are to sketch a cleaner version applying visual design principles.

Module 8: From Analysis to Narrative

  • Converting analytical findings into story arcs.
  • Framing insights as strategic recommendations.
  • Techniques for presenting trends, outliers, and cause-effect visually.

Activity: Storytelling Exercise

  • Build a short data story using a sample dataset provided.
  • Participants design visuals by creating dashboards or presentation slides that communicate insights and key messages clearly.
  • A presentation session will be conducted to practice data storytelling.
